The panelists included Ed Lagrassa, President of Chilton Realty International; Sue Bacon, Managing Director and Head of Premises and Logistics for BNP Paribas; Rob Lowe, Executive Vice President at Cushman and Wakefield; and Gagandeep Singh, Senior Manager of Deloitte Consulting LLP. Each panelist shared lessons-learned in previous down markets and discussed the valuable experiences that are guiding them professionally today.
Sarah Currie of VVA, and fellow Young Leaders Committee member, Meeta Shingne of WPP, served as moderators for the event and began by asking the panelists to identify key career strategies that have helped them in previous economic downturns. Some of the advice they gave was:
-
Stay connected. Keeping in touch with professional contacts during market highs and lows can save you in a downturn.
-
Gain a diversity of experiences, and remain open to new and different opportunities.
-
Maintain and expand one's skill-set by regularly attending industry functions and educational seminars.
- Always conduct oneself with integrity on all sides of a transaction. The industry can be surprisingly small and there is strong likelihood of working with other individuals again.
The panel also discussed the option of pursuing formal education versus gathering more work experience and the various industry sectors that have sustained activity or that are showing signs of growth, including alternative energy, sustainability and alternative workplace strategies. They also commented that there are growing opportunities in distressed real estate throughout the country.
